Project Info

The project to introduce etiolation resistant and repeated planting resistant peach rootstock and to introduce technology of rapid propagation and large-scale seedling cultivation¡± is proposed to address etiolation in large peach producing areas of Chengdu. Etiolation lowers tree growth, reduces photosynthesis and seriously decreases yield and quality. Peach producing areas of Chengdu mainly distribute on purple soil with PH7.5~8.5. Peach seedlings with poor uniformity and stress resistance have been used as rootstock for a long time in China. Microelements such as iron are difficult to be absorbed and utilized by roots, which further influences formation of chlorophyll in new tips and results in etiolation. As peach trees have a short life, etiolation appears earlier and severer if trees are planted in fixed position (repeated cropping) in original aged fruit farms. Most of peach producing areas in Chengdu are facing the problem of aged peach trees. In addition, shortage of land makes it difficult for sustainable and high-effective development unless special peach rootstocks are used. In many developed countries in Europe and America, etiolation resistant, repeated planting resistant and good uniformity clonal rootstocks have been widely used in some new planting or repeated planting fruit farms, in conjunction with technology of rapid propagation and large-scale seedling.

Technology

1.        Introduction special etiolation resistant and repeated planting resistant rootstocks

2.        Introduction of technology of rapid propagation and large-scale seedling of special etiolation resistant and repeated planting resistant rootstocks

3.        Research and assessment on etiolation resistance and repeated planting resistance effects of various special stress resistant rootstocks and main varieties in Chengdu

Features

It is the first time to use the most simplified, effective, economic and practicable special stress resistant clonal rootstock to solve the prominent technical problem of etiolation resistance and repeated planting resistance in peach producing areas of Chengdu. It is a technically advanced in China.

Market Prospects

20% yield increase per unit area and over 70% of high quality fruit rate can be expected. Outcomes will be applied in all peach producing areas in Chengdu, in over 300,000mu in Sichuan Province, and over 2,000,000mu in China.

Status

1.       From 2003 to 2004, we sent 6 persons to Italy for cooperative research and advanced study lasted 3~6 months.

2.       A rapid propagation lab, a virus testing lab, a 30mu seedling raising base, 1000m2 intelligent constant-temperature shed have been set up, and relative equipment purchased.

3.       Established long-term cooperation relationships with Italia IAO, Institute of Phytopathology,  Fruit Tree Institute of Ministry of Agriculture-Forli, Fruit Tree Department of Milan University, Agriculture Institute and Fruit Tree Institute of University of Bologna, Institute of Fruit Tree (Rootstock) Rapid Propagation and Industrial Seedling-Cessena etc. Prof. Daniele Bass, Dr. Giuliano Dradi and Dr. Annarosa Babini have jonted the cooperation research.

4.       We have 5 persons who have been engaged in long-term research on corollary planting technology of peach varieties with rich experience.

About the Proposing Party

Horticulture Research Institute of Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Science has 58 employees, among which 34 are scientific and technical personnel, and 5 of which are researchers. Scientific and technical personnel with senior and intermediate professional title account 87.1% and those with doctorate and master degrees account 45.2%. It mainly engages in introduction and seed selection of new species of fruit trees, flowers, watermelons, researching and popularization of planting technology, rapid propagation of de-poisoned fruit seedling and flowers. It is the lead institute for fruit tree breeding project during the Tenth Five-Year Plan of Sichuan Province, and it has undertaken key tasks in breeding of mandarin orange, peach, pear, plum and sweet tomato. The institute has successfully carried out the ¡°Nontoxic Seedling Propagation Center of Sichuan, China¡± which is one of the projects under cooperation between Chinese and Italian Government.
