Longquan of Chengdu is the largest juicy peach producing region in China. In recent years, etiolation of peach trees and diseases has caused large losses to juicy peach production. The project team hopes, by means of international cooperation, to introduce alkali resistant soil and nematode resistant rootstocks to overcome etiolation of peach trees, and meanwhile, to gradually eliminate infection and detriment through establishment of disease-and-pest-free technology system for seedling cultivation, so as to clean the obstacles for restoring and developing local juicy peach industry. |

There is no precedent for selection and application of resistant peach rootstock in purple alkali soil regions and for seedling cultivation system of disease-and-pest-free peach in China. Therefore, the Project has outstanding features of locality, being innovative and technically advanced. |

| Market Prospects |
Chengdu ¡°Longquan Juicy Peaches¡± have been well known as ¡°Beset Peaches in the World¡±. Longquan mountains extending dozens of kilometers are suitable for peach farms. However, etiolation of peach trees and disease infection have sharply reduced yield of lots of peach gardens. A large number of trees even start to die. It¡¯s an inevitable trend to renew and replace the old generation of peach trees. Therefore, the market prospects for resistant rootstock and disease-and-pest-free seedling are very bright. |

| Status |
Through studies in recent years, the main cause for peach etiolation has been identified to be alkali soil (pH value over 8.0) and disease infection. Dangerous diseases include leaf spot disease, peach leaf disease, necrotic ring spot disease, dwarf disease and peach latent mosaic virus, etc. |

| About the Proposing Party |
Horticulture Research Institute of Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Science is the only professional research institute for fruit trees in Sichuan Province. The Institute has 58 employees, among which 34 are scientific and technical personnel and 12 of which have senior professional titles. In recent years, the institute has undertaken many national, provincial and ministerial level research assignments and projects. It is the lead institute for fruit tree breeding project during the Tenth Five-Year Plan of Sichuan Province, and it has undertaken key tasks in breeding of mandarin orange, peach, pear, plum and sweet tomato, and has bred a lots of superior and new fruit species. |
